DIY Dog Toys: Week 4 - Outdoor and Activity Toys

Ineke Turner

Welcome to Week 4 of our DIY Dog Toy series! This week, we're focusing on outdoor and activity toys to keep your Doberman engaged, entertained, and physically active.

1. Frozen Treats

Beat the heat by creating frozen treats for your Doberman. They’re refreshing and can be tailored to your dog's taste preferences.

Materials Needed:

  • Ice cube trays, water, dog-safe ingredients (such as peanut butter, yogurt, or broth)

Instructions:

  1. Mix together dog-safe ingredients such as peanut butter, yogurt, or broth with water to create a liquid mixture.
  2. Pour the mixture into ice cube trays and place them in the freezer.
  3. Once frozen, remove the treats from the ice cube trays and store them in a freezer-safe container.
  4. Give your dog one of these frozen treats on a hot day to help them cool down and provide a tasty snack!

2. DIY Flirt Pole

A flirt pole is perfect for high-energy Dobermans. It encourages lots of movement and play, which helps burn off excess energy. (This one is my dogs' favorite!)

Materials Needed:

  • PVC pipe or dowel, rope or bungee cord, toy or lure

Instructions:

  1. Cut a length of PVC pipe or dowel to your desired length for the pole.
  2. Drill a hole through one end of the PVC pipe or dowel.
  3. Thread a length of rope or bungee cord through the hole and tie a knot to secure it in place.
  4. Tie a toy or lure to the other end of the rope or bungee cord.
  5. Use the DIY flirt pole to engage your dog in interactive play by swinging the toy or lure around for them to chase and catch!

3. DIY Agility Course

Set up an agility course in your backyard using household items. It's a fantastic way to mentally and physically stimulate your Doberman.

Materials Needed:

  • Household items (such as cones, hula hoops, broomsticks, and blankets)

Instructions:

  1. Set up a course in your backyard or living room using household items like cones, hula hoops, broomsticks, and blankets.
  2. Arrange the items to create obstacles such as jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and balance beams.
  3. Encourage your dog to navigate through the course using treats and praise as rewards.
  4. Practice different agility exercises to improve your dog's coordination, speed, and confidence!

4. DIY Ball Pit

Fill a kiddie pool with plastic balls to create a ball pit for your Doberman. It’s a fun way for your dog to explore different textures and play in a unique setting.

Materials Needed:

  • Kiddie pool, plastic balls

Instructions:

  1. Fill a kiddie pool with plastic balls of various colors and sizes.
  2. Encourage your dog to jump into the ball pit and search for toys or treats hidden among the balls.
  3. Use the ball pit as a fun and interactive way to provide mental and physical stimulation for your dog.

5. Fabric Frisbee

Create a lightweight fabric frisbee that's perfect for outdoor play. It's easy to throw and won't harm your Doberman's teeth.

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric scraps, scissors, needle and thread

Instructions:

  1. Cut a large circle out of fabric scraps to create the frisbee shape.
  2. Fold the edges of the fabric circle inward and sew them together to create a reinforced edge.
  3. Optionally, you can add a layer of stuffing between the fabric layers to give the frisbee more structure.
  4. Your fabric frisbee is now ready for tossing and fetching with your dog!

Wrapping Up Week 4

That's a wrap on Week 4! We hope your Doberman loves these outdoor and activity toys. Join us next week for the final installment of our series, where we'll be focusing on calming and nosework toys.
