DIY Dog Toys: Week 3 - Sensory and Chew Toys

Ineke Turner

Welcome to Week 3 of our DIY Dog Toy series! This week, we're focusing on sensory and chew toys that will satisfy your Doberman's natural chewing instincts and keep them mentally stimulated.

1. Sock Ball

Transform an old sock into a sensory-rich chew toy that’s perfect for a game of fetch or some chewing fun.

Materials Needed:

  • Old sock, fabric scraps or socks for stuffing

Instructions:

  1. Take an old sock and stuff it with fabric scraps or old socks until it's filled to your desired size and firmness.
  2. Tie a knot at the opening of the sock to secure the stuffing inside.
  3. Optionally, you can reinforce the knot by sewing it closed with a needle and thread.
  4. Your sock ball is now ready for tossing and fetching with your dog!

2. Sock Monkey

Turn an old pair of socks into a quirky and cute monkey toy that your Doberman will love chewing on. It’s easy to make and fun for your pup!

Materials Needed:

  • 2 old socks, buttons or felt for eyes and mouth, needle and thread

Instructions:

  1. Take one sock and cut off the foot part, leaving the leg part intact.
  2. Turn the sock inside out and sew across the heel to create the monkey's mouth.
  3. Stuff the sock with filling (such as fabric scraps or cotton batting) to create the monkey's head.
  4. Sew or glue buttons or pieces of felt onto the face for eyes and a mouth.
  5. Cut the other sock into four equal pieces to make arms and legs, then attach them to the body with stitches.
  6. Your sock monkey is now ready for cuddling and playtime with your dog!

3. Plush Bottle Toy

Add an exciting crinkly sound to playtime by wrapping a plastic bottle in a fabric sleeve or sock. The crunchiness will keep your dog entertained.

Materials Needed:

  • Empty plastic bottle, old sock or fabric sleeve

Instructions:

  1. Take an empty plastic bottle and make sure it's clean and dry.
  2. Insert the plastic bottle into an old sock or fabric sleeve, leaving the top open.
  3. Tie a knot at the top of the sock or fabric sleeve to secure it in place.
  4. Your plush bottle toy is now ready for chewing and shaking fun!

4. Water Bottle Cruncher

Give new life to empty plastic bottles by stuffing them into old socks for a satisfying, noisy chewing toy.

Materials Needed:

  • Empty plastic water bottle, old sock or fabric sleeve

Instructions:

  1. Take an empty plastic water bottle and make sure it's clean and dry.
  2. Insert the plastic water bottle into an old sock or fabric sleeve, leaving the top open.

5. Homemade Squeaky Toy

Create a DIY squeaky toy by inserting a squeaker into a homemade fabric toy. Your Doberman will enjoy the interactive sounds.

Materials Needed:

  • Plastic squeaker (from an old toy or purchased online), fabric scraps, needle and thread

Instructions:

  1. Cut two identical shapes (such as circles or squares) out of fabric scraps.
  2. Place the plastic squeaker between the two fabric shapes and sew them together, leaving a small opening.
  3. Insert the plastic squeaker into the opening and sew it closed securely.
