Week 1: DIY Tug and Fetch Toys for Your Doberman

Ineke Turner

If you've got a high-energy Doberman, you know how much they love tug-of-war and a good game of fetch. This week, we're diving into five durable DIY tug and fetch toys that will provide hours of entertainment for your playful pup.

1. Braided Tug Toy

Transform those old t-shirts or fleece strips into a strong, braided tug toy. The durable fabric makes it perfect for a Doberman's vigorous play sessions.

Materials Needed:

  • 3 old t-shirts or fleece fabric strips (each about 2 feet long)

Instructions:

  1. Lay out the fabric strips side by side and tie a knot at one end to hold them together.
  2. Begin braiding the fabric strips together tightly. If using t-shirts, you can cut them into strips first.
  3. Continue braiding until you reach the end of the fabric strips, then tie another knot to secure the braid.
  4. Trim any excess fabric if necessary, and your braided tug toy is ready for playtime with your dog!

2. Denim Knot Toy

Recycle your old denim jeans into a sturdy knot toy that satisfies your Doberman's need to chew and tug. This toy is built to last!

Materials Needed:

  • Old denim jeans, scissors

Instructions:

  1. Cut the denim jeans into long strips, about 2 inches wide.
  2. Gather three strips and tie a knot at one end to hold them together.
  3. Begin braiding the denim strips together tightly, just like braiding hair.
  4. Continue braiding until you reach the end of the strips, then tie another knot to secure the braid.
  5. Trim any excess fabric if necessary, and your denim knot toy is ready for chewing and tugging!

3. Rope Ball

This toy combines two fun activities: tugging and fetching. Wrap a tennis ball in rope and knot it securely to make a durable toy.

Materials Needed:

  •  Thick rope, tennis ball

Instructions:

  1. Cut a piece of thick rope to your desired length, depending on the size of the ball you want to make.
  2. Take one end of the rope and thread it through the hole in the tennis ball until the ball sits snugly in the middle of the rope.
  3. Tie knots on either side of the tennis ball to secure it in place.
  4. Trim any excess rope if necessary, and your rope ball is ready for fetching and chewing!

4. DIY Rope Toy

Get creative with thick rope strands to make a toy that's perfect for a game of tug-of-war with your pup.

Materials Needed:

  •  Thick rope

Instructions:

  1. Cut a piece of thick rope to your desired length, depending on the size of the toy you want to make.
  2. Tie knots at both ends of the rope to prevent fraying.
  3. Optionally, you can braid multiple strands of rope together for added durability.
  4. Your DIY rope toy is now ready for games of tug-of-war and fetch with your dog!

5. DIY Ball Rope

Add a bit of bounce to your fetch games by tying multiple tennis balls onto a rope. It's a fun way to mix things up for your dog!

Materials Needed:

  •  Thick rope, tennis balls (number depends on your dobie's preference)

Instructions:

  1. Cut a piece of thick rope to your desired length, considering the number of tennis balls you want to attach.
  2. Tie a knot at one end of the rope to prevent unraveling.
  3. Push a tennis ball onto the rope until it reaches the knot.
  4. Tie a knot on the other side of the tennis ball to secure it in place.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each additional tennis ball you want to add.
  6. Trim any excess rope if necessary, and your DIY ball rope is ready for throwing and fetching fun!
